A mother from New York is revealing the terrifying moment her long hair got caught in the fan belt of a car and she was scalped.
In October 2016, Alon Abare, who now wears a wig to conceal her injuries, was addressing a technical problem. Her hair entangled itself in the running fan belt as she bent beneath the hood.
“I reached in without thinking, and my hair got caught,” Abare said to Inside Edition.
She cried out for assistance in a desperate manner, and her kids came running to her side.
“I told them, ‘Find a pair of scissors and cut Mommy’s hair out so I can get free,'” she recalled.
Her daughter Logan tenderly trimmed her hair to free her from the equipment while her son Sam swiftly switched off the engine.
“They were driven by the need to help their mom and were very focused,” Abare said, complimenting her kids’ rapid thinking.
Abare is being treated by Dr. Keimun Slaughter at the Williams Center for Plastic Surgery in Albany, with the ultimate goal of getting her scalp ready for a hair transplant. Abare covers her wounds with a wig in the interim.
When I put on my wig, everything seems to be the same. However, mentally, it’s difficult,” she sobbed.
Inside Edition worked with auto safety expert Lauren Fix to explain the risk. They demonstrated how easily hair may become entangled in a fan belt by placing a wig on a mannequin under a running automobile hood. Abare’s hair was instantly twisted and pulled in, much like the wig.
This incident highlights the risks that long hair presents when it comes to go-kart engines, farm equipment, and even rides at amusement parks.
Lauren Fix provides important guidance for anyone handling vehicles: Pull your hair back at all times. As you replace parts or check for leaks, be sure to tie your hair back and take out anything that could catch. and make sure the car is always off.”
Here are some more safety advice:
All jewelry should be taken off since it can catch on things or come into contact with electrical parts. This includes watches and bracelets.
Steer clear of hanging items like scarves or ties.
Wear gloves when working on your car and keep them in your car.
A lot of auto parts companies provide free help with maintenance like changing filters and wiper blades.
The tale of Alon Abare serves as a potent warning of the unanticipated risks involved in routine actions. Her boldness and her kids’ quick thinking saved the day, emphasizing how crucial safety measures are to averting such mishaps.
