The 16-year-old’s father was detained for attempting to erect a taller barrier on the side of the bridge where his daughter perished in an automobile accident.
In Gainesville, Georgia, Cecily Mcree Hamilton lost her life when the vehicle she and her boyfriend were riding in went over a bridge’s edge.
Cecily’s father, Shannon Hamilton, observed the cops pulling the automobile out of the water beneath the bridge.
“I kissed her and declared my love for her. embraced her icy body and bid her farewell, he revealed to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Hamilton claimed that if there had been a guardrail at the bridge’s edge, the teenagers would not have perished. Although they acknowledged the theory, local officials stated that permission was still pending for the guardrail’s construction.
Hamilton started to worry that he might have to see another car being dragged out of the river since he thought the pace was moving too slowly.
“Every day that passes is an additional day that we put a life in danger by going into that creek,” he declared.
Hamilton then decided to take action and brought his own excavator to the bridge to assist with the guardrail’s construction. Hamilton intended to construct a berm, or a makeshift ledge, to help stop automobiles from driving off the bridge, according to WSB-TV.
While local officials worked out a long-term solution, the berm was intended to offer a stopgap.
Before Hamilton could complete his task, deputies from White County arrived and made an attempt to talk him out of it. Authorities warned him that if he continued to work on the berm, they would have to place him under arrest.
After returning to work, the bereaved father was imprisoned for interfering with government property. His son was present when the arrest was made.
Hamilton expressed gratitude to the Gainesville Times that the administration recognized the issue.
He stated, “They had to do it.” “There was nothing for them to do.”
Following his bail release, Hamilton was given assistance by the neighborhood.
Hamilton adamantly stated that he felt driven to shield other families from going through what happened to him even though he did not want to breach the law.
In order to deal with what he had gone through, he also started giving talks about safe driving at Cecily’s high school.
“We can never guarantee tomorrow,” he remarked. “That’s how I’m grieving, and I’m using my optimism to get through each day.”
