The FedEx driver engaged in the incident was found to have a properly licensed handgun, according to the police.
The 32-year-old driver started the confrontation while he was delivering a delivery to a house in the 600 block of Unruh Avenue. He was accosted by an armed robber who shot him after taking his keys and wallet, according to Philadelphia Police Department Captain Jason Smith. The motorist opened fire again, seriously wounding 27-year-old Jevan Lundy.
Police subsequently discovered Lundy unconscious in the 1400 block of Creston Street. Shortly after arriving at Einstein Medical Center, he was pronounced dead. The victim’s FedEx ID card was found by the officers at the site.
Lundy was discovered with another man, and the car was examined. Police think Lundy was driven away from the shooting scene in the automobile. The individual was brought in for interrogation, although it was not apparent if he was charged. Smith said, “He is talking to us, obviously not implying that he was involved in this robbery.”
The victim, who managed to flee the scene, was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of his truck in an Acme parking lot located on the 6600 block of Oxford Avenue. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach.
Officers found his properly licensed 9mm handgun and carry permit inside the truck after he told them he had shot Lundy.
Acting Police Commissioner Christine Coulter stated, “According to the preliminary story that was relayed, it appears to be self-defense: he was shot first, and he fired back.” A neighbor in the area where the shooting occurred, Margie Helverson, described the driver as a “nice guy.” “I’m hoping he’s okay because he’ll ring the doorbell to let you know there’s a package there,” she remarked.
A FedEx representative stated, “The safety of our team members and service providers is a top priority and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time,” in response to a question about the company’s policy regarding armed drivers.
