Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 26, 1933. Because her parents were alcoholics, she was raised by her grandmother. In the 1940s, they relocated to Hollywood, where Burnett attended the University of Southern California to study theater.
She became an overnight success after landing her big break in 1957 on The Ed Sullivan Show with a humorous song that parodied young women’s love for Elvis Presley.
