The shooting that left a 73-year-old grandma injured in the leg and a house invader dead in the street has prompted Goldsboro police to open an investigation.
Calls of a shooting around 402 S. William Street were answered by officers. Officers discovered the woman at the house with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. A man with what appeared to be a gunshot wound was discovered at the junction of William Street and Elm Street shortly after the 1 a.m. response.
Khalil Herring, 19, passed away from his wounds after they were both taken to Wayne UNC Health Care.
Two masked attackers reportedly forced their way into the house and demanded money. They shot the woman in the leg, prompting the woman’s 12-year-old grandson to shoot at the intruders in self-defense.
Herring was one of the masked burglars shot during the break-in, according to the evidence.
“They entered the house, I opened the door, and they entered there,” stated Randolph Bunn, the woman’s son and the boy’s great-uncle. One of the men was armed. They simply placed me on the ground. I’m not sure why they shot the 73-year-old woman who was in the kitchen.
The 12-year-old is still being investigated, but no charges are anticipated against him, according to Goldsboro police.
“His grandmother was just shot by [the intruder]… He would have killed us all, Bunn said, “and he would have shot him and me as well.”
