As the little girl’s mother and sister were receiving treatment for injuries they sustained in an automobile accident, a California fireman received recognition for her actions.
On a roadway close to San Diego, a large truck veered into oncoming traffic, as reported by KNSD. A mother and her two small girls, as well as another adult family member, were inside one of the automobiles that the truck struck.
Firefighter paramedic Ryan Lopez of the Heartland Fire & Rescue Department took on the duty of consoling the 4-year-old daughter, who was unharmed, while the mother and one of the girls received medical attention for their wounds.
The tender moment was caught on tape as Lopez rocked the girl back and forth and side to side while holding her in his arms.
Lopez took the girl to the fire engine after a little while, where he set her down and offered her a drink of water. Then she was back in his arms, her head leaning against his shoulder.
Lopez discussed the incident with KNSD.
Regarding the 4-year-old, he remarked, “She really just wanted to hang on and just feel safe.”
Lopez, who has a daughter who is two months old, said he understood the most crucial thing to do was console the baby after establishing that she was not gravely hurt.
The firefighter added that he believes what he did to simply be part of his job, adding that any other first responder would have done the same.
“It’s not something I would ever seek out to take any recognition for,” he stated. “I know someone else in my same position would’ve done the same thing.”
The large rig driver lost control while traveling south on State Route 125, according to the California Highway Patrol, and collided with a metal guardrail. After that, he entered the northbound lanes and struck two cars. The 57-year-old Nancy Bauerlein and her 29-year-old daughter Jennifer Thompson-Campbell were riding in a Chevy. In the collision, both of them perished.
The two girls, aged 4 and 6, their mother, and an additional adult were all riding in the black Kia Sorrento that was hit by the truck.
The 6-year-old girl was having difficulty breathing and had a broken neck as a result of the tragedy. She was brought to a children’s hospital in the area.
Lopez assisted a 4-year-old child who was only slightly hurt.
The 6-year-old daughter of the girls’ mother was able to travel in the ambulance with her despite also having minor injuries.
